Mini Movers
A creative movement class for the littlest movers, ages 3 -4!
Minimovers is an Intro to dance class for 3-4 year olds..  Through the season MInimovers will be introduced to the fundamentals, beginner techniques and beginner grooves and footwork of the different dance forms taught at Movemakers.  This class is meant to prepare them and get them familiar with certain movements, dance forms, dance vocabulary, counting, learning to dance together as a group(choreography) and on their own (freestyle) so when they move up and become a Movemaker they already have a head start.  We bring the Minimovers on an adventure through history, location and dance.  They learn the dance form, where it was created, by who and its roots, these dance forms include: Hip Hop. Breaking, Locking and Latin Social Dance (Merengue and Salsa). Every two months we add on a new dance form leaving the last 2 months of the season to practice and gain confidence with them all!

Hip Hop Dance 5 -7 years old

For our youngest hip hop dancers, we provide a fun environment for developing self-awareness and body control. The kids learn basic concepts for arm gestures and poses, foot work and floor work. For the 5-7 yrs group, teamwork is a primary theme. The students work in small groups to practice skills or choreography, ultimately, creating the foundation for accountability, communication and leadership. Through kids’ hip hop, your little ones will learn how to groove out to pop and hip hop beats while also reinforcing life skills that support successful engagement in other communities and activities.

Beginner to Advanced Hip Hop Dance for ages 6 to 18

Technique, cultural appreciation and physical competency are the highlights of these youth hip hop dance levels. Hip Hop Dance is a sophisticated dance form with a diverse array of sub-styles and complex movement patterning. Each class features exercises to promote physical awareness and confidence. We use exercises that enhance strength, flexibility, coordination, mobility and agility. Through building physical competency we are able to ensure successful comprehension of hip hop dance technique and physicality. Through the grasp of the mechanics of the dance, students learn to maximize self-expression and how to reflect the energy of music. With control of their bodies, our students are able to open themselves to experiencing the joy of riding the beat. The dancers learn how to apply themselves to a variety of musical forms as they learn the technique and vocabulary of Popping, Locking, Breaking, House Dance, Street Jazz, Pop, Hip Hop new and old school. Movemakers Philly hip hop dancers have a full and authentic immersion into hip hop dance.

Breakin’

Break Dance is the most athletic and acrobatic branch of hip hop dance. Break dance is composed of standing foot work, floor work that consists of moves that build from a squat position to movements on the stomach and back. Headstands, handstands and various other arm balances and inverted skills are common features in break dance as well. Our Break Dance curriculum and classes are directed by Bboy Metal of Hip Hop Fundaments. Metal and other members of Hip Hop Fundamentals provide students with a fun, safe and efficient pathway towards learning break dance. Repetition is a staple in Movemakers Philly break dance classes. There are few kids in Philadelphia with as much GRIT as our bboys and bgirls. Break dance students learn the value of hard work, determination, commitment, repetition and emotional and physical resilience.

Acro and Gymnastics Tumbling via Break Dance Program

There’s nothing more fun than witnessing someone do a backflip or hold a handstand for 30 seconds. These skills are common features in Hip Hop Dance. Traditionally, Hip Hop dancers have had to learn these skills on their own, in their backyards or concrete. This is a testament to the resourcefulness of the pioneers. They’ve paved the way for Movemakers Philly’s Hip Hop Dance School to offer gymnastics for dance in a safe, accessible and efficient way. In our break dance program, students learn core, arm and leg strength conditioning exercises that are common place in circus and gymnastics. They also learn the proper way to stretch. As far as skills, students begin with jumps, leaps, roll variations, headstands, handstands, cartwheels and round-offs. As they progress in ability and into higher levels, we begin to introduce front and back walkovers, front and back handsprings, aerials (no handed cartwheels), and finally back and front tucks.

@movemakersphilly will add gymnastics tumbling to our hip hop dance programming in the fall. Our #bboys and #bgirls will take flight. Let's go #gymnasticstumbling #cheerleading #martialartstricking #circustraining #phillykids #philly @martialposture

World Percussion via Philly Music Factory

Too often in the states, dance education is separated from music education, whereas, many folkloric traditions around the world hold them in tandem. At Movemakers Philly, we see dance and music as mutually important and beneficial. Drumming lessons are a wonderful way to emphasize the connection between dancer and musician. Our group percussion classes through our partners at Philly Music Factory are a wonderful entry point into the world of music for new music students and an opportunity for practicing young musicians to expand their study. Students will learn folkloric music from Cuba like Conga and Rumba. They will also learn Samba from Brazil. They will learn to play the following instruments tumbadora (a.k.a conga); cowbell, shakers, floor tom (basedrum). These lessons will reinforce concentration, listening, musicality, self-control, cultural appreciation and teamwork. Students will showcase their skills in showcases at the end of each session.

Spring break camp, kids learn Afro-Cuban folkloric rhythms. More activity like this coming in the summer.
