Teacher Spotlight: Ms. Emerald!

Emerald Sims is a multidisciplinary movement artist and dance educator born in Philadelphia. Emerald began her dance journey at the age of four years old, and since then she has committed herself to expanding her knowledge of the art. She took a comprehensive approach to building her foundation in dance. She graduated with a bachelor’s in psychology with a concentration in sports psychology and neuroscience and a minor in dance at Wilkes University. During her time as a student, Emerald focused on consistently diversifying her technical training in various styles with mentors from other major cities like NYC and LA.  She uses her years of dance education to continue to cultivate her own unique style. Emerald primarily draws from on hip-hop and house style movements, with heavy influences from clowning. In her career as an educator and member of the dance community, she dedicates herself to spreading the love of movement to her students and fellow artists alike. Emerald is continuing to expand herself as a dancer and performer across the East Coast, keeping the culture and history of street dance at the forefront of all she does. ​

Kayliani Sood is a dance artist and educator from Saint Peters, Missouri. As a multidisciplinary artist, Sood’s work is characterized by the use of dance, songwriting, and visual arts to express rich, compassionate, and personal stories. As a teacher, their passion and experience in dance education spans early childhood through adult ages. They hold a BFA in Dance from the University of the Arts and are an active performing artist and choreographer in Philadelphia. In 2024, Sood premiered their solo, “Valerie” with singer-songwriter Franny Lane in the Cannonball Festival, duet “Jumper Cables” with collaborator Allison Smith in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and dance film “Sugar & Blue” with filmmaker Daniel Krantman in the 20/92 film festival. In recent years they have performed with Brian Sanders, “JUNK” Curt Haworth, and Vincent Johnson.

Genesis Castaneda is a Cuban-American dancer born and raised in Miami, Florida. Her dance journey began under the guidance of Michelle Grant-Murray at Miami Dade College, where she cultivated a strong foundation in dance. Genesis continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from the University of the Arts. Genesis specializes in street and social dance forms, drawing inspiration from her diverse cultural background. She is passionate about sharing her knowledge and love for hip-hop culture with communities through teaching and mentoring. Genesis is an active dance community member, performing with acclaimed choreographer Rennie Harris and contributing her talents to Carne Viva Dance Theatre. Her performances blend tradition with contemporary expression, reflecting her dedication to artistic innovation and cultural storytelling.

Jr. Performance Team with Ms. Rachel

The MoveMakers Performance Team consists of a group of students who have proven that they are hardworking, driven and passionate dancers and role models for other MoveMakers students. You can see the Jr. Performance team putting in the WORK in Ms. Rachel's class. Here they are working on perfecting a routine. They also work on cyphering, battling, freestyling and coming up with their own choreography (solo and in groups). The performance team can be seen performing at events around the city. Most recently they performed at Rittenhouse Square! Keep an eye out for them!
